Dr. Richard M. Stone is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as Director of the Adult Acute Leukemia Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He holds the Lunder Family Chair in Leukemia and serves on the Medical Oncology Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Stone is also vice chair of the Leukemia Core Committee for the national cooperative trials group Cancer and Leukemia Group B.
Dr. Stone received his MD in 1981 from Harvard Medical School, completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and his hematology-oncology fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He is board certified in Hematology (1988), Internal Medicine (1984), and Medical Oncology (1987).
His primary research focuses on patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), and myeloproliferative disorders. Dr. Stone's laboratory investigates novel targets in leukemia pathophysiology, particularly FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibition in AML. His research spans targeted therapy in T cell ALL based on NOTCH inhibition, application of intensive "pediatric-type" strategies in adults with ALL, and evaluation of novel drugs including histone deacetylase inhibitors, NEDD-8 inhibitors, HSP90 inhibitors, and MEK inhibitors for AML and MDS.
Analysis of Dr. Stone's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on molecularly targeted therapies for specific leukemia subtypes, with particular focus on FLT3-mutated AML, IDH-mutated AML, and KMT2A-rearranged leukemias. His work increasingly examines health disparities in leukemia care and treatment outcomes across different demographic groups.
- Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Medical Oncology Teaching Award (2007)
Dr. Stone has mentored numerous clinical trials investigating novel treatment approaches for acute leukemias. His leadership in the Cancer and Leukemia Group B trials has significantly influenced current treatment standards. He has received research support for studies on FLT3 inhibitors, venetoclax combinations, and other targeted therapies for acute leukemias.
Dr. Stone leads the Translational Research program within the Adult Leukemia Program at Dana-Farber, bridging laboratory discoveries with clinical applications. His team collaborates with basic science researchers to understand mechanisms of leukemogenesis and resistance to targeted therapies.
