Richard M. Leventhal

Richard M. Leventhal is Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and Executive Director of the Penn Cultural Heritage Center at the Penn Museum. He also serves as Curator in the American Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, where he previously held the role of Williams Director. His academic and professional affiliations place him at the forefront of cultural heritage, public policy, and archaeological research.

Leventhal's research centers on the intersection of cultural heritage preservation and community development, with a focus on empowering local communities through heritage initiatives. His work spans ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, particularly the Maya in Yucatan, Mexico, where he co-directs the Tihosuco Heritage Preservation and Community Development Project. He explores the intellectual history of American archaeology and advocates for ethical practices in museums and archaeology. His geographical expertise includes Latin America/Caribbean, the Near/Middle East, and North America.

His research interests include applied archaeology, indigenous studies, material cultures, state formation, violence, and social conflict. He has developed implementation models for heritage preservation in regions affected by conflict, including Mexico, Syria, and Iraq. He examines the evolving role of museums and monuments in the 21st century, emphasizing public engagement and ethical stewardship.

Leventhal teaches courses such as ANTH1410: Public Policy, Museums, and the Ethics of Cultural Heritage and ANTH5110: Ethics, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage, reflecting his commitment to training future scholars in ethical and applied anthropology.
