Richard Karpen is a Professor of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) at the University of Washington in Seattle and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Music. He has held leadership roles including founding Director of DXARTS (2001), Director of the School of Music (2009-2020), and Associate Dean for Research and Infrastructure in the College of Arts and Sciences (2006-2009). Born in New York in 1957, Karpen’s work spans composition for electronic media, live performance, and innovative computer applications in music. His research focuses on interactive performance, sonic arts, and experimental music technologies.
His compositions are performed internationally by leading ensembles and soloists such as the Seattle Symphony and JACK Quartet. Collaborations include the experimental improvisation ensemble Indigo Mist with Cuong Vu. Karpen has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Bourges Contest, and Luigi Russolo Foundation.
