Richard Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Politics at the University of Strathclyde's School of Government and Public Policy, affiliated with StrathCyber. He joined the institution in 2013 after earning a PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Davis, alongside a BA in Political Science from UCLA and an AA in Liberal Arts from Long Beach Community College. His research focuses on arms trade dynamics, international conflict processes, and conflict management, with a particular emphasis on arms transfers between states and their geopolitical implications.
Johnson's teaching portfolio includes courses such as International Relations and Global Politics, War and Terrorism, and US National Security Policy. He has led projects like the 'State of the Arms Trade' and 'Cyber Strategies and Norms Development,' funded by the British Academy. He has been recognized with awards including the Strathclyde Teaching Excellence Award (2015) and The Data Lab MSc Programme (2020).
His recent research explores major powers' intervention strategies via arms supplies, U.S. arms sales vs. military aid policies, and British arms transfer policies post-WWII. He contributes to cybersecurity policy frameworks and has published datasets on arms transfer analysis. Johnson advises two graduate students and engages in policy outreach and peer reviews.
