Richard English is a Professor of Politics and Director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen's University Belfast. He specializes in the history of political violence, terrorism, and nationalism, with a focus on Ireland and the UK. His works include seminal books like Does Counter-Terrorism Work? and Armed Struggle: The History of the IRA. He holds numerous fellowships, including from the British Academy and Royal Irish Academy, and has been awarded the CBE (2018) and the Royal Irish Academy Gold Medal (2019). English is also an affiliated faculty member at the University of Chicago and Harvard University.
