Dr. Richard J. Elsworthy is a Research Fellow at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham, where he conducts cutting-edge research on the mechanisms of neurological diseases using stem cell models. He collaborates closely with Professor Sarah Aldred and contributes to teaching in modules such as Exercise Biochemistry and Research Skills.
- BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science – University of Gloucestershire
- MSc Sport and Exercise Sciences – University of Birmingham
- PhD Biochemistry – University of Birmingham
Dr. Elsworthy's research focuses on understanding early pathological features of Alzheimer’s disease and schizophrenia through iPSC-derived brain models. He investigates how exercise can modulate oxidative stress, amyloid-β processing, and neuroinflammation to promote brain health. His work bridges molecular neuroscience and exercise physiology, aiming to identify therapeutic targets and preventive strategies for neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders.
His recent publications (2020–2025) highlight themes in stem cell modeling, exercise interventions, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways in Alzheimer’s disease and psychosis. These studies employ advanced techniques including iPSC-derived neurons and astrocytes, biomarker analysis, and clinical trials, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to brain health.
Scientific Awards:
- Alzheimer’s Research UK Early Career Researcher
Dr. Elsworthy is actively involved in public engagement, having organized dementia awareness events funded by ARUK. He is a member of the Biochemical Society and the Society for Free Radical Research. While no formal advisees are listed, his collaborative work suggests a strong mentoring role within research teams. He has contributed to major trials like MedEx-UK and Exercise4Psychosis, demonstrating expertise in designing and implementing exercise-based interventions.
His lab work centers on developing cortical models of Alzheimer’s disease and investigating early dysfunction in schizophrenia, operating within the broader research ecosystem of the University of Birmingham’s neuroscience and rehabilitation sciences community.
