Richard Illingworth is a Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Glasgow's Department of Political & International Studies, joining in September 2023. His research focuses on the Responsibility to Protect (R2P), genocide prevention, humanitarian intervention, and cosmopolitan theory. He critiques R2P's implementation gaps and proposes cosmopolitan reforms to strengthen global atrocity prevention frameworks. Notable works include his 2023 book Strengthening the Responsibility to Protect: A Transitional Cosmopolitan Approach and articles analyzing R2P's practical challenges. Illingworth is also a Fellow of Advance HE, emphasizing pedagogical innovation in teaching international relations modules like 'Humanitarian Intervention' and 'War and International Security.' He currently does not accept PhD supervisees.
His research spans structural reforms to the United Nations, including proposals for an R2P Commission and UNSC veto restraint mechanisms. Publications highlight cosmopolitan ethics as a foundation for global justice and human protection.
