Richard I. Dick is a Professor at Cornell University's College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he has served since 1977. Prior to this, he held faculty positions at the University of Illinois (8 years) and the University of Delaware (5 years). He has extensive professional experience in consulting engineering and the U.S. Public Health Service before pursuing his doctorate.
His research focuses on environmental engineering, water quality, and public health, with notable roles such as Distinguished Visiting Scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratory (1986–1989). He has led professional organizations, including serving as President of the Association of Environmental Engineering Professors and roles in the International Association on Water Quality.
Recipient of prestigious awards including the Chi Epsilon CEE Professor of the Year, Cornell’s Daniel M. Lazar Teaching Award, and the McCormick Award for advising. His career combines academic leadership, policy engagement, and impactful contributions to environmental engineering education and practice.
