Richard Huntley is a Lecturer in Percussion at the Manhattan School of Music and has been affiliated with institutions such as the Lycee Francaise and Denmark's Fokemusicksolen. He holds an M.M. from Manhattan School of Music (2004) and a B.A. from UC San Diego (1991). His research focuses on Afro-Cuban folkloric music, Lucumi traditions, and batá drumming, with extensive fieldwork in Cuba. Huntley has performed globally with artists like Dom Salvador, Nikolaj Hess, and Hazmat Modine, appearing at major festivals including Berlin Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival.
Teaching & Awards: Taught at Manhattan School of Music's Pre-College Division since 2003, conducted clinics in Denmark and Japan, and received the 1989 Outstanding Talent Award from the International Association of Jazz Educators. His pedagogy emphasizes integrating music theory with percussion techniques.
Recent Work: Active in New York's jazz scene, leading combos and collaborations. Recent recordings include The Art of The Hang (2014) and You (2014), blending jazz with global rhythms. Regular performances with Hazmat Modine and Broadway Brassy showcase his versatility in ensemble and theatrical contexts.
