Richard Hornsey is a University Professor at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering, where he holds a position in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has served in multiple administrative roles, including Associate Dean for Engineering in the Faculty of Science & Engineering, Vice Dean, Interim Dean at Lassonde School of Engineering, and Chair of his department. A licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario, he earned his MA, MSc, and DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford.
His research spans both technical engineering and historical studies, with a current focus on the history of engineering and technical education. Earlier work involved liquid metal ion sources, quantum electronic devices, amorphous silicon sensors, and biologically inspired image sensors. His publications include The Many-sidedness of George Minchin Minchin (Springer, 2023) and Imperial Engineers (University of Toronto Press, 2022), which explore Victorian scientific education and 19th-century British engineering in India.
He received the Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and has contributed to both engineering and historical disciplines. His career reflects a unique blend of technical innovation and archival research, including detective work on historical narratives like Whiffin of Whiffin Spit and Sarah Hornsey's transportation.
