Professor Richard Holliman is based at the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences at The Open University. He served as the university’s Champion for Public Engagement with Research (2012–2015) and is Principal Investigator on the RCUK-funded Engaging Opportunities Project, focusing on schools-university partnerships. His career spans interdisciplinary research, teaching, and leadership in public engagement with research.
- Education: PhD in Sociology (Department of Sociology, The Open University), with support from the Institute of Educational Technology.
Richard’s research explores media representations of science and public engagement practices. He has led initiatives to embed public engagement principles in academic research culture, emphasizing participatory approaches and organizational change. His work intersects with technology-enhanced learning, particularly in science communication and digital scholarship.
As academic lead, he contributed to the OU’s MSc in Science and Society and Communicating Science in the Information Age. He co-supervises postgraduate research students and collaborates across disciplines, including partnerships with the Institute of Educational Technology and Wolfson Foundation-funded projects.
Richard actively engages in action research, working with institutional decision-making forums (Faculty Deans, Associate Deans for Research, Research Centre Directors) to align public engagement with strategic objectives. He also contributes to the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement network.
