Professor Richard Hobbs is the Mercian Professor of Primary Care at the University of Oxford and serves as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (without portfolio). He is affiliated with Jesus College and Harris Manchester College, directing the Oxford Institute of Digital Health and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration. His academic career spans decades, focusing on digital health, cardiovascular epidemiology, and clinical trials, particularly in heart failure, stroke prevention, and disease prevention.
With over 700 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 121, his work has significantly influenced international health policies and clinical guidelines. He led the development of major trials such as BAFTA, SAFE, SMART, and TASMINH, which transformed hypertension and atrial fibrillation management. His research groups include Chronic Kidney Disease, Heart Failure, and Stroke Prevention.
He received the RCGP Discovery Prize (2018) and was awarded a CBE for contributions to medical research. Supervising 4 DPhil students, he spearheads initiatives like the PANORAMIC trial (funded £18.5m) and advocates for academic primary care capacity globally.
