Richard Hidary serves as Professor of Judaic Studies at Yeshiva University and holds a rabbinic position at Sephardic Synagogue. His academic career combines rigorous scholarly research with practical religious leadership, focusing on making classical Jewish texts accessible to contemporary audiences.
His research spans Talmudic studies, rabbinic literature, Jewish law (Halakha), Jewish holidays, and the intersection of classical rhetoric with rabbinic texts. Hidary explores how ancient Jewish legal and philosophical concepts relate to modern democratic values and contemporary ethical dilemmas, demonstrating the ongoing relevance of traditional Jewish thought.
Hidary has authored significant scholarly works including 'Dispute for the Sake of Heaven: Legal Pluralism in the Talmud' (2010) and 'Rabbis and Classical Rhetoric: Sophistic Education and Oratory in the Talmud and Midrash' (2018). His recent writings examine topics such as the relationship between Rosh Hashanah's divine kingship concept and American democracy, and methodological approaches to understanding Shabbat prohibitions in Talmudic literature.
Through his educational initiatives, Hidary maintains an active public scholarly presence with Daf Yomi classes on YouTube (YouTube.com/rhidary) and several educational websites including teachtorah.org, pizmonim.org, and rabbinics.org. He is currently working on a literary and philosophical commentary on Talmudic discussions of Jewish holidays, continuing his exploration of how traditional Jewish texts engage with fundamental human experiences.
