Richard Heller is a Professor in the Department of Medical Engineering at the University of South Florida, affiliated with both the College of Engineering and Morsani College of Medicine. He holds a PhD in Medical Sciences (1989) and multiple advanced degrees in Microbiology, Health Sciences, and related fields.
His research focuses on developing translational therapies for cancer, wound healing, and metabolic disorders through innovative drug and gene delivery methods, including electrotransfer and plasma-based technologies. Key areas include immunotherapy, plasmid DNA delivery, and synergistic effects of physical and biological agents.
- Grants: NIH-funded projects on plasmid DNA delivery and electroporation systems.
- Awards: Frank Reidy Award (2013), IEEE Senior Member (2017), and multiple academic honors.
Recent work explores combining pulsed electric fields, non-thermal plasma, and heat to enhance therapeutic efficacy in pancreatic cancer and melanoma models. His lab also develops novel devices for targeted molecule delivery and impedance-based monitoring.
