University of Torontoمعرفی
Richard Greene is a Professor in the Department of English and Drama at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), Faculty of Arts and Science, serving as Acting Director of the MA in English in the Field of Creative Writing and a Senior Fellow at Massey College. His academic work spans British literary periods from the Restoration era to contemporary times, with dual expertise in scholarly research and creative practice.
Greene earned his Honours Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford.
- Hons. BA, Memorial University of Newfoundland
- D.Phil, University of Oxford
His research centers on Restoration and Eighteenth-Century British literature—particularly women poets like Mary Leapor—and Twentieth-Century British literature focused on figures such as Graham Greene and Edith Sitwell. He maintains active creative engagement through poetry writing and Canadian literary studies, bridging critical analysis with artistic creation.
Greene's publications reveal consistent thematic threads: biographical explorations of major literary figures, editorial recovery of marginalized voices (especially eighteenth-century women writers), and poetic works examining solitude, maritime identity, and Canadian landscapes. His scholarship demonstrates deep intertextual connections between historical context and creative expression.
He has received significant recognition including the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry (2010), Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and National Magazine Award Gold in poetry (2015), with a 2022 Edgar Award shortlisting for his Graham Greene biography.
- Shortlisted for Edgar Award (Mystery Writers of America) for best biographical or critical work (2022)
- National Magazine Award Gold in poetry category (2015)
- National Magazine Award Honorable Mention in poetry category (2019, 2014)
- Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012)
- Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry (2010)
As Acting Director of the MA in Creative Writing program, Greene mentors graduate students through thesis supervision and creative workshops, while teaching undergraduate courses ranging from foundational writing to specialized topics like spy fiction and individual creative projects.
He contributes to UTM's vibrant arts ecosystem through the Department of English and Drama's Centre for New Theatre and Theatre Erindale, which supports performance studies and theatrical productions.
