Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicineمعرفی
Professor Richard G White is Professor of Infectious Disease Modelling at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) within the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Dynamics, Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health. He leads the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases, the TB Centre, and the Vaccine Centre at LSHTM. Previously, he served as co-head of the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology with Katherine Fielding from 2019-2021.
His educational background includes:
- BSc in Physics from Durham University
- MSc in Medical Demography from LSHTM
- PhD in Infectious Disease Modelling from LSHTM (2006)
Professor White's research focuses on mathematical and statistical modeling of infectious disease transmission and control, particularly tuberculosis (TB) and HIV. His work spans TB vaccine development, optimal vaccination strategies, TB transmission dynamics, and the economic impact of TB interventions. He has co-authored around 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and currently leads multiple research grants from Wellcome Trust, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and NIH. Recent publications reveal growing interest in TB's intersection with nutritional status, climate change, and health systems strengthening in low- and middle-income countries, with significant attention to implementation science and policy translation.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with:
- Director's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research (2020)
- Methodology Research Fellowship from the UK Medical Research Council (2009)
Professor White actively supervises PhD students in TB and vaccine modeling and has co-authored the textbook "An Introduction to Infectious Disease Modelling" published by Oxford University Press. He organizes the LSHTM Infectious Disease Modelling MSc Module and Summer Short Course, contributing significantly to training the next generation of infectious disease modelers. His extensive committee memberships include co-chair of the Epidemiology, Modelling, and Trial Designs Research Community in the Consortium for TB Vaccine Discovery and TB lead of the Global Fund for AIDS, TB, and Malaria Modelling Guidance Committee.
