Dr. Richard Fuchs is a Research Professor at the University of Greenwich’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, affiliated with the Natural Resources Institute (NRI). He holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Leeds. His expertise spans food safety, microbiology, and quality management, with 35 years of global experience in research, education, and consultancy.
Research interests include rapid diagnostic methods for foodborne pathogens (e.g., Listeria monocytogenes in fisheries), traditional fermentation processes, and strengthening food security systems in developing countries. He has led projects funded by international organizations such as the UK DFID, ACP/OCT, and COLEACP, focusing on laboratory capacity building (ISO 17025 compliance) and e-learning program development.
Teaching roles include Programme Leadership for the MSc Applied Food Safety and Quality Management, where he contributed to curricula and e-learning modules. He has also held leadership roles, including Head of Programme at the International Foundation of Science (Stockholm), supporting young researchers in developing nations. His consultancy work bridges academia and industry, aiding small businesses and government sectors in the UK and globally.
Richard’s contributions extend to training workshops, network development, and collaborative initiatives with organizations like the International Potato Centre and the World Health Programme.
