Richard Drake is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Psychology & Mental Health at the University of Manchester's School of Health Sciences. He holds roles as Clinical Lead for Mental Health in Health Innovation Manchester and Honorary Consultant Psychologist at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. His work focuses on improving clinical practice through research, particularly in schizophrenia and psychosis treatment.
Education & Qualifications: B.Sc. in Physiology (1989), M.B.,Ch.B. (1992), M.R.C.Psych. (1996), Ph.D. (2003).
Research Interests: Outcome assessment in early psychosis, physical health impacts of schizophrenia (e.g., cardiovascular health, circadian rhythms), neuropsychological impairment (cognitive remediation), and precision medicine strategies. He collaborates widely, including on the STRATA program for treatment stratification and culturally adapted interventions.
Key Projects: Collaborates on trials such as CaFi (culturally adapted family intervention), CARMS (suicide-focused psychological intervention), and studies on clozapine use in youth. Leads efforts to improve medication management and digital health tools.
Awards: Recipient of the Laughlin Prize and Gaskell Medal. Active in professional bodies like the British Association of Psychopharmacology and Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Teaching: Contributes to MSc programs in Applied Mental Health Practice and trains medical students, junior doctors, and professionals on schizophrenia and psychopharmacology.
