Dr. Richard Douglass-Chin is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing at the University of Windsor. He specializes in pre-twentieth-century American literature, African American, Asian American, and postcolonial literatures, as well as cultural studies and imperialism in media. His work bridges historical and contemporary literary traditions, with a focus on diasporic experiences and transnational influences.
Education: B.A. (McMaster University), M.A. (Western University), Ph.D. (McMaster University).
Research interests include the intersection of African and Asian literary traditions with American transcendentalism, modernism, and postmodernism. His publications include Preacher Woman Sings the Blues and articles in MELUS, FUSE, and Revista la Torre. Recent works explore themes of madness, translation, and resistance in Black women’s diasporic writing, such as his analysis of NourbeSe Philip’s Zong!.
He leads The Alchemy Machine, a global poetry and prose initiative collaborating with the University of Windsor’s International Student Centre and Turtle Island House Aboriginal Education Centre. His research has taken him to South Africa, the Caribbean, and Hong Kong, and he has presented groundbreaking work on the Belinda Royall petition at the Isaac Royall House and Slave Quarters.
