His research explores how eighteenth-century writers like Hannah More, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Jane Austen framed reading as a form of symbolic labor for women, challenging the moral panic around novel-reading. Current work investigates domesticated wonder in children’s literature by figures such as Anna Letitia Barbauld and Charlotte Smith.
Dr De Ritter supervises postgraduate students on diverse topics including childhood illness in Romantic writing, human-animal relations in Chinese literature, and meat consumption in contemporary writing. He is affiliated with the Environmental Humanities Research Group.
