Richard Day is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto, specializing in Soviet studies, political economy, and Marxist theory. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of London and an MA from the University of Toronto. His career began at the Erindale campus (now UTSC) in 1970, where he focused on Soviet political philosophy and economic theory. Key works include Leon Trotsky and the Politics of Economic Isolation and Cold War Capitalism: The View from Moscow, 1945-1975. Day has translated and edited seminal Soviet texts, including works by Preobrazhensky and Bukharin, while exploring intersections between political philosophy and economic analysis.
His research emphasizes how Soviet intellectuals engaged with Western political economy, revealing their critical insights into capitalist systems. Recent publications (2020-2022) focus on Soviet economic debates, imperialism theory, and the legacy of Trotskyist critiques. Day co-edited Democratic Theory and Technological Society, recognized as an Outstanding Academic Book (1988-89). His work bridges historical materialism with contemporary political challenges, addressing how technological society impacts democratic institutions.
