Richard Davies is a Professor in Practice at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and holds the UK’s first Chair in the Public Understanding of Economics at the University of Bristol. He directs the Economics Observatory and the Harvard-LSE Growth Co-Lab, focusing on inclusive growth strategies for governments. Previously, he worked at the Bank of England, HM Treasury, and as economics editor for The Economist.
Education:
- Bachelor’s in PPE (Politics, Philosophy, Economics) from Oxford University
- MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics
- PhD in Economics from New York University’s Stern School of Business
Research Interests: His work employs micro data to address macroeconomic puzzles such as inflation, productivity decline, and trade dynamics. Recent collaborations include analyzing UK economic dynamism and the inflationary impacts of trade policies.

- Winner of the 2020 Lonely Planet/Stanford Prize for debut travel writing for Extreme Economies
- Recipient of international acclaim for his books and articles in outlets like The New York Times and The Financial Times
Advocacy and Leadership: Leads initiatives such as the Festival of Economics and the open-access Economics for Everyone project. Served as executive director of CORE, a global economics education charity.
