Richard D. Schaller is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University and a Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory. His research group investigates optical properties and dynamic processes in novel nanomaterials using ultrafast, time-resolved spectroscopy techniques with energy-relevant applications.

Research Focus: Schaller's work centers on quantum confinement effects in matter through ultrafast transient absorption and emission spectroscopy. His group studies fundamental processes including single exciton relaxation and multiple electron-hole pair generation in nanomaterials, with direct implications for energy technologies. Current research spans nanoscale material characterization and photophysical dynamics.
Advising & Collaborations: Professor Schaller actively mentors seven current graduate students (including joint appointments with the Chen, Hupp, Hersam, and Kanatzidis groups) and has guided 14 alumni to careers in academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. His laboratory maintains strong partnerships with Northwestern University's Department of Chemistry, Argonne National Laboratory's Center for Nanoscale Materials, and multiple synthetic/theoretical research groups.
Group Operations: The Schaller Group holds bi-weekly meetings (both virtual and in-person at Tech K144), with scheduled sessions through Summer 2025. The group previously hosted a public nanoplatelet research symposium in December 2018 covering theoretical, synthetic, and characterization aspects.
