Dr. Richard Cheney is a Professor at the UNC School of Medicine, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His career spans decades of research in cell biology, with a focus on unconventional myosins, filopodia, and cytoskeletal dynamics. He received his BS from Oregon State University (1980), PhD from Washington University (1989), and postdoctoral training at Yale University (1995).

Cheney's research investigates the molecular mechanisms of Myosin-X (Myo10) in cellular processes such as filopodia formation, mitotic spindle regulation, and cancer invasion. Myo10 binds PIP3 and integrins, linking signaling lipids to cytoskeletal dynamics. His work has revealed roles for Myo10 in epithelial cell polarity, cancer metastasis, and neural stem cell biology.
The 15 most recent publications highlight Myo10's centrality in mitotic spindle bipolarity, cancer progression, and developmental signaling. Keywords include Cell Biology, Cancer Research, and Developmental Biology, with subfields such as spindle orientation, filopodia dynamics, and metastatic signaling.
Cheney has mentored 7 postdocs, 8 PhD students (including 3 MD/PhD), and served as Director of Graduate Studies for his department. He currently directs the graduate Cell Biology course and has participated in over 65 thesis committees.
