Richard Carson is a Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and Biomedical Engineering at Yale University, serving as Director of Graduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering. He holds a PhD in Biomathematics from UCLA (1983) and a BS in Applied Math-Biology from Brown University (1977). His research focuses on advancing PET imaging technologies, including ultra-high-resolution systems like the NeuroEXPLORER, and developing mathematical models for radiopharmaceuticals. Key areas include synaptic density imaging, receptor-binding analysis, and clinical applications in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.
Dr. Carson has authored over 400 peer-reviewed articles and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism. He has received prestigious awards such as the IEEE Marie Skłodowska-Curie Award (2024), Image of the Year Award (2024), and the Yale Graduate Mentor Award (2023). He leads the Yale PET Center (2007–2022) and collaborates with institutions like the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and the Wu Tsai Institute.
His work spans translational research, including studies on dopamine receptors, synaptic vesicle proteins, and PET tracers for diabetes and oncology. Ongoing projects leverage cutting-edge techniques like deep learning for image denoising and motion correction in NeuroEXPLORER systems.
