Richard Carl Berg is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography & Geographic Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and serves as Director and Principal Geologist of the Illinois State Geological Survey. He is also an Affiliate at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). His expertise spans geomorphology, soil science, and advanced geological modeling techniques. Berg holds a B.S. in Physical Geography (1971, Indiana State University), an M.A. in Geomorphology (1974, Eastern Michigan University), and a Ph.D. in Soil Geomorphology (1979, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).
His research focuses on innovative applications of geologic mapping, 3D/4D modeling, and data integration for environmental and resource management. Recent work includes strategic planning for national geologic mapping programs and analyzing organizational roles of state geological surveys. His publications address technological advancements in geoscience data visualization and interdisciplinary approaches to subsurface analysis.
Berg’s contributions include leadership in institutional restructuring of geological surveys and advocating for the adoption of modern geospatial technologies. His affiliations highlight interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, government agencies, and computational research institutions.
