Richard Carbonaro is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and Associate Dean of the School of Engineering at Manhattan University. He holds a B.S. and M.E. in Environmental Engineering from Manhattan College, and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on chemical fate/transport in natural systems, soil/sediment remediation, and geochemical redox cycling of metals. Key areas include chromium transformations, water quality monitoring, and metals risk assessment.
He has secured significant grants including NYC DEP-funded studies on emerging contaminants and a $1.3M SERDP project on munition constituent reduction. Notable awards include the 2019 ASCE Greeley Award and multiple teaching accolades. He advises students on environmental engineering topics and teaches courses ranging from chemical reaction engineering to environmental chemistry.
His 150+ publications span Environmental Science & Technology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. Recent work emphasizes predictive modeling of munition compound reduction via iron oxides and humic acids. He serves as a Professional Engineer and part-time consultant at Mutch Associates for environmental remediation projects.
