Elizabeth Carraway is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences at Clemson University, located at 334 Brackett Hall. Her research focuses on applying environmental chemistry to engineered and natural systems, with expertise in oxidation/reduction reactions, contaminant remediation, and nanomaterial behavior. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Virginia (1989) and a B.S. in Chemistry from the College of Charleston (1981), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Michigan and California Institute of Technology.
Her research interests include the environmental effects of nanomaterials, metal toxicity influenced by humic substances, and redox reactions involving electron shuttles like metalloporphyrins. Current projects emphasize aquatic behavior of metal-based nanomaterials, contaminant measurement in South Carolina, and remediation strategies using zero-valent iron. She values innovative analytical methods to address environmental challenges.
Dr. Carraway teaches courses on environmental analytical chemistry, introductory environmental science, and nanotechnology. Her work bridges laboratory innovation with real-world environmental protection, contributing to biogeochemical cycle understanding and ecosystem restoration.
