Richard Burrows is a Lecturer and Director of the Percussion Ensemble at the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Western University. A distinguished percussionist with over two decades of experience, he is renowned for dynamic performances and innovative contributions to contemporary classical music.
Education:
- Two master's degrees from the University of Toronto in Performance and Music Education under mentors Russell Hartenberger, Robin Engelman, and Bev Johnston.
Burrows' expertise spans percussion performance, contemporary repertoire development, and music education. He has premiered numerous works by leading composers, significantly expanding percussion literature while emphasizing technical mastery and expressive depth. His educational philosophy centers on creativity, collaboration, and musical exploration through workshops and masterclasses worldwide.
Ensembles and Leadership:
- Founding member of TorQ Percussion Quartet (2004–present), performing with Toronto Symphony and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
- Artistic director of Open Ears Festival, dedicated to adventurous sound and innovative music presentation.
- Director of Western University's Percussion Ensemble, shaping ensemble performance practices.
