Richard Burke is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University. His research focuses on molecular genetics of Drosophila melanogaster, heavy metal homeostasis, invertebrate developmental biology, and animal models of neurodegenerative diseases. He has led and collaborated on multiple research projects including studies on Menkes disease and copper's impact on protein turnover. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Key projects include investigating copper's role in proteasome function, Menkes disease mechanisms, and developing zebrafish models for neuromuscular disorders. He has secured grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for studies on copper homeostasis and platinum chemotherapy interactions. His research outputs span articles in journals like Metallomics and Developmental Biology, focusing on genetic, biochemical, and physiological mechanisms in model organisms.
Advising and grants include roles as Chief Investigator on projects totaling over AUD millions. His lab's work bridges basic research with clinical applications, particularly in neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders. Collaborations span institutions globally, advancing understanding of metal biology in health and disease.
