Professor Richard Brown is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the School of Chemistry. He holds a PhD from the University of Southampton (1994) and has held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship (1996–present). His research focuses on organic synthesis, total synthesis of natural products, asymmetric synthesis, and organic electrosynthesis. He leads projects on electrosynthesis in microfluidic systems and novel drug development.
Key research interests include the synthesis of biologically active natural products and the development of sustainable electrochemical methodologies. His work spans from fundamental reaction mechanisms to industrial applications, including collaborations with companies like Eli Lilly. Awards include the Royal Society Fellowship, and he has supervised numerous interdisciplinary projects funded by EPSRC and EU initiatives.
Recent publications highlight advancements in electrosynthetic strategies, including radical crossover sequences and photocatalytic processes. His lab participates in collaborative networks such as the Interreg European programs, fostering international student exchanges and joint research ventures. Current projects explore aging dynamics in power transformers and hyperpolarized nuclear spin technologies.
