Helena Lundberg

Helena Lundberg is an Associate Professor and Docent in Organic Chemistry at the CBH School, Digital Futures Faculty, KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She leads the Lundberg Chemistry Lab, focusing on synthetic method development and electrosynthetic transformations. Her research emphasizes sustainable synthesis, catalysis, and electrochemistry, with applications in bio-based materials and green chemistry. She holds a PhD from Stockholm University and has held postdoctoral positions at Scripps Research and Stockholm University. Key awards include the ERC Starting Grant (2024) and the Sigrid Arrhenius Award (2015).

Education: BSc in Theoretical Philosophy (Lund University), MSc in Organic Chemistry (Stockholm University), PhD in Organic Chemistry (Stockholm University, 2015). Postdoctoral training under Professors Fahmi Himo and Donna G. Blackmond.

Research interests include the development of reductive electrosynthesis, Lewis acid catalysis, and methodologies for functionalizing strong polarized sigma bonds. Recent work focuses on biomass valorization and electrochemical strategies for selective transformations.

Her lab has produced over 40 publications since 2015, with contributions to Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nature Sustainability, and ChemRxiv. Current research includes collaborations on redox flow batteries and sustainable polymer design.

Awards and grants: ERC Starting Grant (2024), Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research grant (2022), JSP Fellowship (2022), and Sigrid Arrhenius Award (2015).

Advising and collaborations: Supervisor of 20+ PhD and MSc students, with ongoing projects on electrochemical desulfurization, lignin valorization, and flow battery development. Active in industry partnerships (e.g., AstraZeneca) and international collaborations (DTU, Scripps Research).
