Dr. Richard Bowles is a Lecturer in Arts Education & Physical Education at Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick. He holds a B.Ed. from the National University of Ireland, an MSc from the University of Leicester, and a Ph.D. from the University of Limerick. His research focuses on physical education (PE) pedagogy, including students' experiences, teaching methodologies, and the role of external personnel in PE. He also explores meaningful PE experiences and the application of self-study approaches in teaching and coaching.
Dr. Bowles has led projects such as the CHAMP-INC-MPE initiative, funded by the European Commission, aiming to promote inclusive and diverse PE practices in primary schools. He is actively involved in professional development for teachers and coaches, including collaborations with the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) and the Munster GAA Coaching & Games Development Committee. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and wellbeing.
His research outputs emphasize curriculum innovation, teacher education, and student-centered learning. Recent studies highlight themes like reflective practice in coaching, organizational socialization of educators, and the integration of wellbeing into school curricula. Dr. Bowles has received recognition, including the DELTA Award for Excellence in Teaching (2024), and contributes to peer-reviewed journals in education and sports science.
