Prof. Richard Bintanja is a Professor of Climate and Environmental Change at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering, and a Senior Climate Researcher at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). He holds an honorary professorship (since 2017) and leads research on Arctic and polar climate change, paleoclimatology, and Earth system modelling. His expertise includes climate-carbon cycle interactions, hydrological cycles, and polar field expeditions.
Education: MSc in Meteorology/Physical Oceanography (Utrecht University, 1990), PhD in Antarctic Climatology (Utrecht University, 1995). Awards include the PULS Scholarship (1999). He has authored ~100 scientific papers, including multiple high-impact articles in Nature and Nature Geoscience, and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Meteorologica.
Research focuses on Arctic hydrological changes, climate feedbacks, and impacts of Arctic warming on midlatitude weather. Projects include QUASI, CLIMARC, and coordination of the EC-Earth climate model consortium. He has supervised numerous students and contributes to public outreach through fiction writing (5 novels, 1 short story collection).
- Key roles: Project leader (Arctic climate grants), field expedition leader (Antarctica, Greenland), and international conference organizer.
- Grants: NWO grants for Arctic feedback studies, CMIP5/6 contributions, and climate model development.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining field observations, advanced climate models, and societal engagement through both scientific and creative writing.
