Richard B. Miller is a Professor in the Department of Religious Ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School. His scholarly work examines the interplay between religion, ethics, and public life, with significant contributions to political and social ethics, theoretical frameworks in religious thought, and practical ethical reasoning through five major monographs and numerous journal publications.
His research spans Religion and Public Life, Political Ethics, Social Ethics, Casuistry, Medical Ethics, and Cultural Studies in Religion. Miller revitalizes historical ethical methods like casuistry while addressing contemporary issues including terrorism, pediatric medicine, and the cultural dimensions of religious discourse. His work consistently bridges theoretical rigor with real-world applications in moral philosophy.
Miller's publications from 1991–2016 reveal evolving engagement with ethical theory applied to war, medicine, and cultural pluralism, culminating in his exploration of the 'cultural turn' in religious studies. Current research focuses on the ethics of religious studies methodology and the intellectual history of 'nature' in religious discourse, demonstrating sustained interdisciplinary innovation.
He co-founded the 'Minor Classics in Ethics' initiative—a collaborative reading group examining overlooked works in moral philosophy—and designs courses that contextualize ethical arguments within broader historical frameworks. His teaching emphasizes intellectual genealogy, helping students trace concepts through evolving philosophical landscapes while maintaining rigorous analytical standards.
