Richard Appleyard is an Associate Professor (Technical, Industry or Commercial) in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences at Macquarie University. He holds dual roles as Director of Surgical Skills Training and Director of Orthopedic Research. With a PhD and over 30 years of experience, his expertise spans biomechanical engineering, orthopedic research, and surgical training facility development. He established the Surgical Skills and Anatomy Training Facility at Macquarie University, recognized globally as a gold-standard clinical training center.
Research Focus: His core areas include mechanical testing of tissues and implants, medical image analysis, joint kinematics, implant design, and computer modeling of musculoskeletal systems. Recent work involves shoulder motion simulators, knee ligament reconstructions, and spinal disc augmentation devices.
Awards and Recognition: Appleyard received the Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Programs that Enhance Learning (2018) for contributions to surgical education. His research has been supported by grants from the SAX Institute, NSW Ministry of Health, and industry partners.
Labs and Facilities: He leads the Surgical Skills Training Facility and collaborates on projects like the 3D Printing Facility and Motion Capture and Analysis Equipment. Over 100 research outputs and 6 active projects highlight his interdisciplinary impact across biomechanics, orthopedics, and medical device innovation.
