Rich Thompson is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. He announced his retirement in April 2025 but remains active until his final concert on May 1, 2025. Thompson earned his Master of Music (MM) from Eastman in 1984 and has been a faculty member since 1996.
His research and teaching focus on jazz drumming, improvisation, and the evolution of jazz through global musical traditions. Thompson has collaborated with renowned artists like Byron Stripling, Bobby Floyd, and Jeff Tyzik, and recorded albums such as Who Do You Have to Know (2023). He directs the Eastman Jazz Lab Band and emphasizes Eastman’s supportive environment for students.
Post-retirement plans include continuing performances, recording projects, and completing a book on jazz drumming techniques. Thompson’s legacy includes mentoring generations of drummers and contributing to Eastman’s jazz program through his artistry and pedagogy.
