Rhonda Nelson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational and Recreational Therapies at the University of Utah. She holds a BMEd in Music Therapy from Wartburg College, an M.Ed. in Therapeutic Recreation from Temple University, and a PhD in Health Studies from Temple University. Her research focuses on recreational therapy interventions in mental health, adaptive sports, workplace inclusion for individuals with disabilities, and leveraging technology in healthcare education. Notable awards include the Fellow designation from The National Academy of Recreational Therapists (2018) and the Faculty Fellow Award from the University of Utah (2021).
Dr. Nelson has secured grants such as the 'RECREATIONAL THERAPY FOUNDATION' (2024-2025) and led studies on podcast interventions for college mental health and adaptive biking programs for assisted living residents. She has authored over 15 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing program evaluation methodologies and innovative therapeutic approaches.
In teaching, she oversees courses like Dissertation Credits, Thesis Research, and Advanced Recreation Therapy Practice. Professional roles include service on the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professions (CAAHEP) and the Committee on Accreditation for Recreational Therapy Education (CARTE). Her work bridges clinical practice, educational innovation, and policy advocacy in allied health.
