Rhonda Breitkreuz is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta, part of the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on social policy, gender equality, and maternal employment, with a particular interest in how policies affect family well-being and social equity. She leads the Gender, Family and Policy Research Initiative and has held significant roles, including Senior Manager of Policy Research at Alberta’s Ministry of Children’s Services. Breitkreuz has received numerous awards, including the Great Supervisor Award (2020) and multiple Teacher of the Year accolades.
Her work explores global issues such as women’s economic empowerment in seven countries through the ReNEW network, funded by SSHRC and the Worldwide University Network. She also investigates maternal employment challenges in Canada and the economic empowerment of marginalized groups. Breitkreuz teaches courses like HECOL 601 and 692, emphasizing professional development and research ethics in human ecology. Her research spans child care policy, work-family integration, and international development, with grants from SSHRC and other global institutions.
Breitkreuz has advised over a dozen graduate students, focusing on topics like maternal employment, child care access, and immigrant integration. She actively contributes to policy discussions, documentaries, and interdisciplinary collaborations, aiming to bridge research and societal impact.
