Rhiannon Griffiths is a Research Associate at the York Law School, University of York. She holds a BA (Hons) in Japanese and History from SOAS, an LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice, and an MA in Social Research, all from the University of York. Her PhD, defended in January 2024, focused on transitional justice in post-war Japan, proposing a new theoretical framework analyzing post-conflict mechanisms as behavioral coercion. She previously worked as a lecturer in Japan, managed a foreign language media company, and was a lead activist with Amnesty International UK, including roles as Japan Country Coordinator and Research Officer for the Anti-Death Penalty Project.

Her research explores constitutional theory in pre-war Japan, focusing on late-19th-century intellectual developments and the fusion of Western theories with Japanese traditions. She also investigates the legacy of the Asia-Pacific War through case studies like the Tokyo Trial and Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. Rhiannon has taught undergraduate and postgraduate modules at York Law School and contributed to problem-based learning programs.
As a Trustee of the Sam Pegram Humanitarian Foundation since 2023, she engages in external professional activities. Her recent engagement includes organizing the symposium The Butterfly Effect: Staging Madama Butterfly with Integrity & Sensitivity in June 2024.
