Rhian Barrance serves as a Lecturer at Cardiff University's School of Social Sciences and Director of the WISERD Education Multi-Cohort Study, teaching education and sociology modules while leading major research initiatives.
Her academic foundation includes a PhD in Education from Queen's University Belfast's Centre for Children's Rights, where her mixed-methods doctoral research applied children's rights frameworks to analyze student perspectives on GCSE reform across Northern Ireland and Wales.
Dr. Barrance's scholarly focus centers on children's rights, educational equity, and youth social movements. She currently investigates children and young people's activism in Wales, building on prior commissioned work for the Children's Commissioner including an evidence review of children's human rights in Wales. Her research consistently bridges theoretical frameworks with policy-relevant applications in educational settings.
Her project portfolio includes two completed studies for the Children's Commissioner for Wales and prior research fellowship work with the University of Oxford and Queen's University Belfast examining Leaving Certificate predictability in Ireland. She actively contributes to national educational strategy through Cardiff University's representation on the Equity & Inclusion Collaborative Research Network.
As Director of the WISERD Education Multi-Cohort Study, she oversees longitudinal research infrastructure. Additional leadership roles include Trustee of Play Wales and editorial board membership for the Welsh Encyclopaedia of Social Sciences (Esboniadur Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol), demonstrating her commitment to both academic scholarship and community engagement in Welsh social sciences.
