Professor Siegel's research focuses on constitutional law with particular emphasis on reproductive rights, equality theory, and historical interpretation of constitutional provisions. Her work critically examines the use of 'history and tradition' in constitutional interpretation, especially as it relates to the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade. She has pioneered scholarship on how constitutional meaning is shaped by social movements and how courts interact with democratic processes. Her research spans abortion law, equal protection, Second Amendment interpretation, and the intersection of law and social change.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on the political dimensions of constitutional interpretation, particularly examining how historical arguments are deployed in contemporary constitutional debates. She has extensively analyzed the Dobbs decision and its implications, while also exploring connections between historical constitutional interpretation and issues of race, gender, and equality. Her work bridges doctrinal analysis with broader theoretical questions about democratic constitutionalism.
