Reto Föllmi is a Professor of International Economics at the University of St.Gallen (HSG) and Director of the SIAW-HSG. He currently serves as Vice President for Institutes and Executive Education at HSG. Previously, he held roles as Head of the Economics Department and Dean of the School of Economics & Political Science. He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR, London). His research focuses on macroeconomics, international trade, distribution, structural change, and inequality. He earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Zurich and has held visiting appointments at multiple universities. Föllmi has published extensively in leading journals and authored/co-authored books on inequality, growth, and trade.
Education: PhD in Economics from the University of Zurich. Prior academic experience includes a professorship in Macroeconomics at the University of Bern (2007–2011).
Research Interests: His work examines macroeconomic dynamics, the impact of trade policies on inequality, economic growth drivers, and structural changes in economies. He analyzes how credit market imperfections and demographic shifts influence trade patterns and productivity. His recent studies emphasize the interplay between globalization, income distribution, and long-term economic sustainability.
Labs/Teams: Leads the SIAW-HSG research institute, focusing on applied economic research. Collaborates with CEPR on policy-relevant studies.
