Reni Butler, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging at Yale School of Medicine. She specializes in breast imaging, including digital breast tomosynthesis, screening ultrasound, and opto-acoustic imaging. Her clinical practice focuses on diagnostic radiology at Smilow Cancer Hospital, where she contributes to multidisciplinary care. Dr. Butler completed her MD at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, followed by residency and fellowship training at Northwestern University. She joined Yale in 2009.
Her research explores advanced imaging technologies to improve breast cancer detection and reduce unnecessary biopsies. As national co-PI for an opto-acoustic imaging clinical trial, she investigates functional imaging modalities for malignant/benign mass differentiation. She actively contributes to medical education, including revising Yale's curriculum and directing the Yale Undergraduate Shadowing Program at the Smilow Breast Center.
Dr. Butler holds leadership roles in professional organizations like the Radiological Society of North America and American Roentgen Ray Society. Awards include Editor’s Recognition Awards for manuscript reviews and Yale's Special Award for Teaching. She has published extensively on breast imaging, AI in radiology, and imaging technology advancements.
