Renee Jorgensen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Michigan specializing in moral/political philosophy and epistemology. She received her PhD from University of Southern California and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Australian National University and Princeton University.
Her research examines how social norms shape moral rights regarding consent and self-defense under conditions of uncertainty. Additional projects investigate hate speech, racial profiling, and ethics of belief.
Recent publications focus on:
- Moral dimensions of algorithmic decision-making in criminal justice
- Epistemic asymmetries between statistical and individualized evidence
- Ethical constraints on belief formation
Fellowships include ACLS Fellowship and residencies at Harvard's Safra Center for Ethics and Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. Current book project: Rewriting Rights: Making Reasonable Mistakes in a Social World.
