Rev. Rene Kollar, O.S.B. is the Boniface Wimmer Endowed Chair in Monastic Studies and Professor of History at Saint Vincent College. He has been on the History faculty since 1981 and served as Dean of the former School of Humanities and Fine Arts from 2004–2018. His expertise lies in 19th and 20th century Ecclesiastical History, focusing on monastic revival, Anglican movements, and Victorian religious controversies.
Education includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Maryland, M.Div. from Saint Vincent Seminary, and a B.A. from Saint Vincent College. His research spans topics such as monasticism during World War I, anti-convent campaigns in Victorian England, and the spiritual dimensions of grief in interwar Britain. He has authored six books and edited numerous works, including the Wimmer Memorial Lecture Series featuring prominent scholars like Christopher Dawson and Jacques Maritain.
Recognition includes Fellowship in the Royal Historical Society and a 2001 Freedom Project Teaching Grant for an interdisciplinary course on 'Freedom, Politics, and Theology.' His academic engagements include roles as Honorary Research Fellow at King’s College London (1987–88) and Visiting Scholar at Heythrop College (1996–97). He has contributed to journals like the Harvard Theological Review and authored a BBC Wales documentary script on Abbot Aelred Carlyle.
