René Janssen is a Full Professor of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), leading the Molecular Materials and Nanosystems group. His research focuses on functional molecular materials and nanosystems for energy applications, including polymer solar cells, electrochemical cells, and solar-to-fuel conversion. He holds joint appointments in Applied Physics and serves in the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) and EIRES. Janssen earned his MSc (1983) and PhD (1987) from TU/e, with postdoctoral work at UC Santa Barbara. He has received prestigious awards like the NWO Spinoza Prize (2015) and ERC Advanced Grant (2013).
His academic background includes roles as associate professor (1991), full professor (2000), and distinguished university professor (2013). He chairs the NWO Gravitation program 'Functional Molecular Systems' (€26.9M, 2012). Key research areas include perovskite solar cells, organic semiconductors, and material design for energy conversion. Teaching responsibilities span advanced chemical bonding, molecular photophysics, and solar cell technology.
Recent work emphasizes multijunction solar cells, halide perovskite stability, and electrocatalytic water splitting. Collaborations include the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and editorial roles in Organic Electronics. His lab explores novel materials for next-generation photovoltaics and energy storage systems.
