Renata F. Ramos is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University. She has been at Rice since 2008, teaching over 14 courses in biomedical instrumentation, biomechanics, medical devices, and bioengineering fundamentals. Her work emphasizes innovative pedagogy, curriculum development, and interdisciplinary education.
Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tec de Monterrey (2002), Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Arizona (2008), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Rice University (2008–2010).
Her research focuses on educational strategies, including project-based learning and curriculum innovation. She leads academic affairs, oversees accreditation, faculty development, and DEI initiatives. Her awards include the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching (2014, 2017, 2019) and the Theo C. Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award (2023).
Advising and Grants: She advises undergraduate and graduate students, chairs the CTE Fellows program, and leads health professions advising. She has received grants from Experiential Inquiry and Research in the Curriculum, Enhancing Engineering Education, and the Brown Foundation.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), serving as an associate editor for the Biomedical Engineering Educational Journal and a Fellow in the Center for Teaching Excellence.
