Renae Isaacs-Guthridge is a Lecturer in Aboriginal Education at Edith Cowan University's Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research (Kurongkurl Katitjin). A proud Noongar and Yamatji woman with over 25 years of experience in education, she focuses on cultural responsiveness in teaching, Indigenous student support systems, and systemic barriers to school completion for Aboriginal students.
- Currently teaches Aboriginal Contexts in Education to pre-service teachers.
- PhD research explores Aboriginal student transition to university using a strengths-based approach.
- Advocates for equitable access to resources (e.g., computers, internet) and culturally responsive pedagogy to improve outcomes.
Research Focus
Her work highlights that Indigenous students demonstrate strong educational aspirations but face disparities in resource access and familial academic support. Key findings include:
- Indigenous students are three times more likely to have school attendance influenced by teacher relationships.
- Culturally responsive teaching positively impacts motivation and resilience.
- Barriers include rural school underfunding and high staff turnover.
Collaborative Efforts
Co-authored a study analyzing survey data from 536 Western Australian secondary students, emphasizing the need to address access gaps rather than perceived 'aspiration gaps.'
