Dr Remy Gerbay serves as a Lecturer in Arbitration and International Commercial Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, School of Law, Queen Mary University of London, a position held since 2012. He concurrently acts as co-director of the LLM, PGDip, and Certificate in International Dispute Resolution (online) programs and co-director of the executive course on investment law and arbitration. Beyond academia, Gerbay is a Partner at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in Washington DC, heading their investment arbitration practice, and has been appointed as arbitrator in over 30 cases under major institutional rules.
His educational credentials include a PhD in international arbitration law from Queen Mary, an LLM from Georgetown University (Fulbright Scholar; Dean’s Honors List), a Master's Degree from the Graduate Institute (University of Geneva), and a French law degree (Maîtrise) from the University of Lyon (High Honours). Gerbay is admitted to practice as an Attorney in New York and the District of Columbia, and as a Solicitor in England and Wales.
Gerbay's research centers on arbitration institutions, arbitral decision-making, and legal theory, with particular focus on how institutional frameworks shape arbitration outcomes and the psycho-social dimensions of arbitration practice. His work critically examines the tension between institutional normativity and arbitral autonomy, while analyzing the impact of legal culture on arbitration scholarship. He has published extensively on LCIA rules, investment arbitration, and enforcement challenges, with his research cited by tribunals and courts globally.
His recent publications (2023-2015) reveal consistent thematic focus on institutional arbitration mechanics, judicial review boundaries, and theoretical foundations of arbitration. Key trends include empirical analysis of institutional influence, comparative enforcement studies, and critical assessments of arbitration's 'judicialization,' with growing attention to psycho-social dimensions and legal-cultural impacts on dispute resolution.
Professional recognitions include:
- Fulbright Scholar designation during Georgetown LLM studies
- Consistent recognition in Legal 500 directories across UK, US, and Latin America
- Inclusion in Who’s Who Legal for arbitration expertise
Gerbay has supervised LLM students through program directorship and taught undergraduate/graduate courses at Queen Mary since 2012, while also lecturing at SciencesPo, Georgetown, ESCP-EAP, and University of Lyon. Though specific grant details are unreported, his leadership in the PricewaterhouseCoopers-sponsored International Arbitration Survey 2013 demonstrates research funding engagement. His professional service includes editorial roles for the Journal of International Arbitration and ICC Bulletin, alongside active participation in the American Society of International Law’s Dispute Resolution Interest Group.
He maintains deep institutional affiliations through the Centre for Commercial Law Studies and School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary, while holding leadership positions in global arbitration bodies including AFSA (Vice President), LCIA Young International Arbitration Group (former co-Chair), and Kigali International Arbitration Centre. His practice integrates academic research with frontline arbitration work across ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, and investment treaty frameworks.
